Creating AMP Pages in WordPress

In this era where most of the activities are done using mobile phones, having an AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) is as crucial to a business as any other of its aspects. Having an AMP page drastically improves the load time of a web page when being surfed on a mobile.

Here is a video demonstrating the process to create AMP pages in WordPress:

Here are the steps explained:

  • Login to your WordPress account
  • Navigate to Plugins -> Add new
  • Search for ‘AMP’ keyword in the search box
  • You’ll find plenty of plugins under this. Use either of these 2:

  • 5. The first plugin is pretty straightforward and doesn’t require much info from your end. With the second one ‘AMP for WP..’, you get more control over the design aspect. So depending on your need, install and activate the plugin.

Setting up AMP using the first plugin (AMP):

Once you install and activate the plugin, you’ll be able to see a new option in your left pane named AMP. Do the following steps to customize and set your preference:

Navigate to AMP -> General and select one of the template modes amongst the three mentioned:

  • Standard: The active theme integrates AMP as the framework for your site by using its templates and styles to render webpages. This means your site is AMP-first and your canonical URLs are AMP! Depending on your theme/plugins, a varying level of development work may be required.
  • Transitional: The active theme’s templates are used to generate non-AMP and AMP versions of your content, allowing for each canonical URL to have a corresponding (paired) AMP URL. This mode is useful to progressively transition towards a fully AMP-first site. Depending on your theme/plugins, a varying level of development work may be required.
  • Reader: Formerly called the classic mode, this mode generates paired AMP content using simplified templates which may not match the look-and-feel of your site. Only posts/pages can be served as AMP in Reader mode. No redirection is performed for mobile visitors; AMP pages are served by AMP consumption platforms.

Select the option that suits you the most and save settings.
