Inside view of Cellular Jail (Kala Pani)

Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was used by Britishers to exile Political prisoners. It is one of the most dreaded and grueling colonial prisons which witnessed the most atrocious punishments ever imposed on prisoners. The jail now serves as a National Memorial providing visitors a glimpse of its history.

Location

Located in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands, at Atlanta Point.

How to reach?

Situated pretty close to the Aberdeen market and is easily accessible via bus or other private vehicles.

Entry fee?

The entry fee to the jail is Rs. 30.

Entry Timing?

Open every day of the week, 9:00 am to 12:30 pm; 1:30 pm to 4:45 pm

Journey Inside Cellular Jail

History

On entering the main gates of Cellular Jail (Kala Pani), there will be rooms to your left and right, both enriched with the history of the jail, the prisoners/freedom fighters who were punished and about their sacrifices.

Swatantra Jyot

Beyond these rooms, you’ll find the Swatantra Jyot, lit in lieu of all the freedom fighters who lost their lives.

Inside view of the Cell Blocks

The left trail post the Swatantra Jyot would lead you to the Western wings of Kala Pani which are open for tourists to enter and get a view of how dangerous, yet well built, these prisons were.

The jail, when built, had 7 massive wings spread into different directions. Currently, just 3 of them are in place and rest taken down owing to the flight interference they caused. Here are images of the western wing along with the jail structure.

There is a small room situated in the far right end of the prison which was used for the death sentence.

Museum

There is also a small museum situated beside the exit gates providing artifacts for purchase related to the jail.
