About the island

Ross Island, also known as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, situated 2 km east of Port Blair, once served as the administrative headquarters of the British now stands as a tourist attraction for its beauty and the scenic views. The Ross island in Andaman still houses all that was constructed by the Britishers like church, bakery, tennis court, printing press, hospital, cemetery, and others.

Where to get ticket and board from?

The tickets for Ross Island are available directly from the Aberdeen Jetty where the boarding happens as well. There are various private boats that commute travelers in between the islands.

Ticket fare?

The ticket fare to Ross Island is Rs. 350 (two way). This fare doesn’t include the Light and Sound show if you opt-in for it.

Boat Timing to Ross Island?

There are numerous private boats functioning in between 9:30 PM to 5 PM from the Aberdeen jetty which commutes passengers from Port Blair (Andaman capital) to Ross Island.

Time taken to reach Ross Island?

Takes ~15-20 mins on private boats (with capacity ranging from 10-20) to reach the island.

Average time spent on the island?

~1.5 – 2 hours on foot, depending on your fitness would suffice to journey the entire island. Though there are golf rides available on the island, but its’ much better traveling on foot.

Entry Fee

To enter the island, you need to get the entry ticket which is a counter located right at the harbor gate. The entry fee is Rs. 30 for adults (Free for kids aged 5 or less).

Ross Island History (Andaman)

Once the enter the island, the first thing you would notice are huge boards mentioning the history of the islands.

If you take the left trail on entering the island, you’ll find various monuments which were build and used by the Britishers like Water Distillation Plant, Bakery, Swimming pool, Clubs and others.

Center of the Ross island

The left trail of Ross island would eventually lead you to the center where you could see 4 different trails, each leading to a different destination.

Presbyterian Church

The P. Church was a Protestant Church built of stone and the windows had frames build of Burma teak. The glass panes behind the altar were made of beautifully etched stained glass from Italy.

Commissioner’s Bungalow

The bungalow occupied the northern summit of Ross island. It was a large gabled house with Italian tiled floors on the ground level and housed offices and courtrooms at higher levels.

Ross Pond & Cemetery

It’s a small pond encircled with green algae calling out for a scenic look. Also located next to it is the cemetery of all those who died in the prison.

Ferar Beach

Situated at the other end of Ross island and would require a bit of trek down to reach. The beach, however, is pretty clean, covered with white sands and majestic blue ocean. Though swimming on this beach is not allowed, the tourists still enjoy a pleasant time by the shore.

The path back to the harbor

Along this path, amongst the bushes, you can find deer’s roaming freely, peacocks and even rabbits.
